The Need for Retrofit

Why the need for Retrofit/Refurbishment?

The focus for carbon reduction in UK housing has until quite recently been on new homes rather than existing ones. But now policy is shifting to retrofitting existing homes. That shift is long overdue: overall housing is responsible for 27 per cent of the UK’s carbon emissions.

Faced with the realities of climate change and peak oil‚ retrofitting is a wise move. It can increase your home’s self-sufficiency‚ energy efficiency and ability to cope with more rainfall – as well as lower its carbon emissions. Each household in the UK creates around six tonnes of carbon dioxide a year – double the annual carbon dioxide emissions of the average car. Full retrofits can mean a reduction of 50 per cent to 75 per cent – in some cases more. As fuel bills are anticipated to at least double within this next decade, we need to ensure our homes are as energy efficient as possible. This is why retrofits are likely to be ‘the houses of future’.

Against this background, the new Government are paving the way forwards for refurbishment by their introduction of a number of significant legislative drivers – not least the new Green Deal available for homeowners and organisations, Home Energy Management Strategy and further incentives such as Feed in Tariffs (Fits)

The challenge now upon us is to refurbish and radically improve the environmental impact of existing homes. As with all challenges come opportunities! At the same time, there exists a myriad of confusion of where to start on the journey/what should you know to become a knowledgeable and quality Eco-Refurbisher?
